We began the implementation of ProFound AI at the end of 2019 and completed the rollout in the middle of the pandemic, in mid-2020. Just before that time, in mid-2019, we converted our practice to 100% tomosynthesis. We are typically a very high-volume practice reading more than 50,000 screening mammograms per year, and the addition of a ‘second reader’ via ProFound AI helped our radiologists absorb our increased workload. We paused our screening mammogram program per SBI recommendations during the beginning of the pandemic but were quickly back to full plus volume by August 2020. ProFound AI helped us to read those cases quickly with the confidence that we were not missing cancers.

Overall, this real-world study suggests ProFound AI can help radiologists find more cancers, and with greater accuracy, indicating that this innovative tool can not only enhance clinical performance but also potentially improve outcomes for patients. While AI does not eliminate the need for radiologists, it does extend their capabilities considerably, as it greatly assists clinicians in reviewing large DBT datasets and ultimately providing quality care for our patients.

We have had ProFound AI for about two years now, and the way we utilize it has grown as we’ve learned to trust the technology more. Other AI technologies simply do not deliver the level of performance, speed, and accuracy that ProFound AI offers. Additionally, a unique value of ProFound AI is its ability to detect small or subtle lesions, such as invasive lobular cancers. I believe that every woman deserves to have access to this technology, as it can be a critical tool in overcoming healthcare disparities. ProFound AI is an integral part of our workflow that is enhancing our ability to personalize breast cancer screening, and I am so happy that this technology is now available to every patient across our network of facilities.

ProFound AI helps to improve clinical confidence while reading mammograms, which then translates into the discussion I have with the patient. ProFound AI is particularly helpful in finding subtle lesions, such as invasive lobular cancers, which tend to be the type of cancers radiologists fear the most, simply because they can be so difficult to detect. In fact, we were hoping to determine whether ProFound AI detected some of the cancers that we had later deemed as interval breast cancers, or cancers that develop between screenings, and in a good portion of those cases, we confirmed ProFound AI did detect something, even if it was subtle, which only further increased our confidence in the technology.

For radiologists who may not have as much experience with DBT, ProFound AI is a great tool, as it can help ensure they’re being thorough and adequately going through every single image slice. For radiologists who have more experience with DBT, ProFound AI provides additional confirmation and clinical confidence to ensure we’re doing a good job for our patients.

We saw our volume of mammography screenings decrease significantly during the pandemic however, since this past spring, our volume has skyrocketed. We are at least 10% above our pre-pandemic levels at this time, which has led to feelings of burnout by many of our radiologists, but ProFound AI has been a reliable backup for our team, as it helps to ensure we’re performing at an optimum level and calling back only those patients who need additional imaging.

ProFound AI provides added confidence – like someone looking over your shoulder- so I know I’m not the only one looking at these images.

Adopting ProFound AI was straightforward. It increases our comfort level knowing that the technology is reading every image, or slice, and it’s reassuring knowing that this technology will help us not miss a cancer. I typically will read the images without ProFound AI first, just to get a gut impression of the case, but when I turn ProFound AI on, it gives me added peace of mind knowing that the technology will alert me to look at certain images more closely.

ProFound AI significantly reduces the time it takes to review 3D tomo datasets, thus reducing the amount of time needed between patients. The technology allows us to fully harness the advantages our 3D mammography system offers and improves our overall efficiency, which allows us to see more patients throughout the day within the same timeframe.

Currently, dense breasts are considered a risk factor because dense breast tissue masks cancerous tissue on mammography images. ProFound AI not only helps us to review cases with fatty tissue, but we also see an even greater benefit for those women with dense breasts. Before ProFound AI, I might have read a case with dense breasts and thought ‘Let’s call them back in 6 months or a year,’ but with ProFound AI, we can more easily tell whether we should be doing another examination or biopsy. In fact, there have been two recent cases with dense breasts in a short period of time where ProFound AI helped us make the decision for a follow up, and they both turned out to be cancers.
